Andrew Marvell (1621–1678), To his Coy Mistress
|
For a long time, I suppose, I was a rather shy and modest woman, hesitant and perhaps even coy. Maybe it was the way I was brought up. I was a well-behaved and diligent girl at school and university, a tendency that landed me a good job which turned, as these things do, into a moderately successful career in business. And, while I never had any difficulty in meeting nice young men, they all treated me with just a little too much care and respect, and tolerated what must have seemed, in retrospect, my at-best mild interest in sex shading down to, well, close to frigidity.
Now, I'm quite different. I met a man, a real man, perhaps even a bad man, and felt true passion for the first time. I wanted more, much more, and he helped me find it. Let me tell you how it happened.
